Featured Gift: Memory Bears ♥

Happy October! This post is going to be short and sweet.

We all have loved ones up above that we miss dearly. This is an idea that will help you feel like those loved ones are with you each and everyday.

My mom had fond memories of her mother in her pink robe doing everyday things – cooking, cleaning, watching tv, etc. When her mother passed away, she took that pink robe and made it into a Teddy Bear. Check out the picture below!

Unfortunately, I can’t give you a recommendation on who can create this lovable ‘Memory Bear’ but if you head to a local craft fair – anyone who is good at sewing would likely do a custom project for you or may know someone that would!

That’s it for this post. We are just under 10 weeks away from Christmas, you know what’s coming on my next blog… Christmas gifts! Can’t wait to share some things with all of you. If you have a gift that you just loved, I’m looking to start featuring your gifts (those you have received) in my blog, reach out to me at erinlikestogift@gmail.com

PS – My favorite local business has the best seasonal candles. Check out www.antiquecandleworks.com for my forever favorite pumpkin spice candle (It’s seriously the best!). An excellent hostess gift for Thanksgiving or Friendsgiving!

Cheat Sheet to the perfect Thank You!

Hello friends! Where has the time been going? Fall is two days away and it’s been too long since my last post. I apologize – between starting a new job, wedding season and a seasonal cold – I’ve been a busy bee! This post is a bit unique as I won’t be writing about a great idea I have but rather about something else I’m passionate about and it’s pretty simple: Writing ‘Thank You’ cards.

Thank you cards are so important. It goes such a long way when you take the time to hand write a note to someone to state those two simple words. The amount of occasions that you can write a thank you for is endless. Weddings, birthdays, graduations, anniversaries, and even job interviews. Let’s not forget the thank-you-for-being-awesome cards as well. Those are my favorite kind because what friend of mine wouldn’t want some fun mail for once?

I’ve created a four step cheat sheet for you to earn some major brownie points on your next ‘Thank You’ card!

1.) Begin with a ‘Thank You’ (Shocker…)

  • Well, first – a greeting is needed (Hello, Hi, Dear, etc.)
  • Begin the card by saying Thank you!
    • Thank you for…
    • I am reaching out as I want to thank you for…
    • Wow, thank you for thinking of me on my {insert occasion}

2) Discuss the gift you received

  • How will you use it?
  • When will you use it?
  • Who will be using it?

3) Personalize it

  • State why you are thankful for their friendship
  • Discuss an old memory you have with them
  • Throw out an idea for your next get together

4) Thank them once again

  • “Thanks again, it means a lot”
  • “Thank you again, your gift was so thoughtful!”

Friends – It really is this simple! Above mentions discussing a gift but often times you just want to thank a friend for helping you through a rough week – something that isn’t tangible. No matter what – you can’t go wrong. I once had friends thank me for organizing a Chicago Cubs outing with a group of friends. That meant SO much to me (Thanks Joanna and Alysha!). It was the simple thought that they appreciated the time I put in to get the tickets, plan the day, etc.

Here are a two examples of ‘Thank You’ cards, this one is one of my own..

Dear Sara,

Thank you so much for the birthday gift. You know me so well – a beach bag, beach hat and a Cubs Cooler! Sounds like I’m set for my next beach day. I’ve already used the beach bag and hat a handful of times. I’m so thankful for the friendship I have with your family as I’m always looking forward to our next get together. Last time I was over we mentioned a half marathon but maybe a 5k so the entire family wants to participate? Maybe I can attend one of the kids sporting events soon too. Either way, looking forward to seeing everyone again shortly. Thanks again!

Here’s another one that was written to me (Thanks Amanda!)

Thank you so much for my flamingo tumbler. I Love It! Thank you for thinking of me on my birthday. I’m so glad we’ve been hanging out more and that Megan brought us together, I have so much fun with you. Thanks again!

I hope this gives you some inspiration to pick up notecards and a pen and start writing more thank you cards to your family and friends. Just like any gift, it’s the thought that counts 🙂 I love hearing from you – what are your thoughts on thank you cards? Are they important in your family? Do you have a completely different opinion on them? Let me know!

Gift of the Month: Hannah Jane Soaps!

Hello friends! I’m a tad early on this blog post but am too excited to share this with you that it couldn’t wait one more week.

Today, I’m writing about one of my favorite local businesses, Hannah Jane Soaps. I was first introduced to Hannah Jane Soaps when I stumbled upon a business by the name of Nest Number 4 in downtown Michigan City, Indiana. HJS were on display there and in the cutest way! Ever since finding these soaps, they have frequented many appearances in gifts to friends and family.

Here are the Top 5 Reasons I LOVE her soaps and why you should too!

  1. They come in a variety of scents for both men and women, it’s impossible to not find one you like. My favorites are Hello Gorgeous, Hello Handsome, & Lemongrass

  2. They are handmade by Hannah and completely natural.

3. They can be customized for bridal showers, baby showers, bridesmaids gifts, and so much more. Seriously so cute, yet so simple! Here is one example but check out her entire gallery!

4. She creates her soaps in a standard bar size OR in “mini” sizes. If you are anything like me, I get sick of using the same scents over and over and am always trying to change it up. Her mini’s are perfect for me (and very well priced)! I also love throwing them in gift baskets along with a few other spa-like items. Here’s an example I saw on HJ’s Instagram.

5. Last, Hannah is a Purdue Alumni, I love supporting fellow Boilers in there business  and entreprenuerial adventures!

Feel free to follow Hannah Jane Soaps on Instagram and for more information, check out her website (you can order online!). As always, thanks for following along friends!

Small Gift, Big Meaning.

Have you ever noticed a friend going through a really tough time in their life? You never know what to do, what to say, how to comfort them.  A few years ago, I was personally going through a tough time in my life where I was feeling very lost and constantly asking questions that couldn’t be answered. Is this the right choice? Should I do this or that? Etc. It made me realize how the best thing anyone can do for someone going through a tough time is being there for them.

A quick text message, phone call, or even a #TBT picture on social media with them can turn their day around. Aside from my friends doing that, I had one friend (Shout out to Ashley), who sent me a small gift that had such an impact on me.

My day was turned around when my friend mailed me this  “Find Your Way” necklace.

Above, you’ll see the message in the box that the necklace comes in says:

“Feeling lost at sea?

Need a little direction in your life?

Wear this necklace to help you

find your true north!”

Excuse the selfie. It was such a simple necklace from Spartina which is sold in many businesses across the U.S.  I proceeded to wear this necklace everywhere for the next few years. It’s gorgeous but the small message that came with it is what I loved and have always remembered. Spartina offers many necklaces similar to this, all with different messages in them. Find the closest store that sells Spartina here!

I missed my June post as The month flew by and I’m excited for some upcoming blog posts – One featuring a favorite business of mine from LaPorte, IN and another featuring a very unique gift idea to give friends and family for weddings! Stay tuned and as always, send me your feedback!

Follow me on Instagram at erinlikestogift for weekly ideas on gifts that I happen to stumble upon throughout the week. Have a great July!

Smile, there’s beer in this blog!

Yep, you read that right! This post is all about giving beer! Before you read on any further, I’m not telling you to go buy someone just any six pack of beer. This is more creative than that. I am telling you to go to your local liquor store and take advantage of the “Pick your Own 6 pack”! (PYO6P). I love doing this for friends and coworkers! You can literally hand pick six different and trendy beers for your friends/family to try.

Screen Shot 2017-05-18 at 7.44.38 PM

This is a quick, easy and very practical gift – it’s not going to break anyone’s bank, typically runs between $8.99-$10.99. It can be perfect for a housewarming gift or a birthday gift! It’s also great when I don’t quite know the person I’m buying for. Example – You are tagging along to a party that you may not directly know the host. If you don’t want to show up empty handed, this idea could come in handy. A few years back I saw my brother give this as a gift – I can’t take credit for the idea but thanks bro!

Many stores offer the option to pick your own six pack. My most recent find was Binny’s Beverage Depot in Chicago. One word – WOW. If you haven’t been there before I highly suggest it. Huge selection and friendly staff – it’s basically the Rolls Royce of liquor stores if you ask me! (Disclaimer: I don’t frequent liquor stores very often, so I’m no expert). Aside from this place you can often find the PYO6P at Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, and Strack & Van Til.

Above is a PYO6P that I bought for a coworker. She’s an IPA gal so I picked out 6 IPAs.

Looking to go the extra mile on this gift? Add a 6 pack carrier to the mix. I’ve seen these all over the place in retail stores such as Target, TJ Maxx, and Marshalls!

3 Gift Ideas for Mother’s Day

Hello friends!

Welcome to April’s blog post. Spring is in the air and that means Mother’s Day is just around the corner — Sunday, May 14th to be exact! My #1 tip for giving a perfect gift is to start thinking about it early.  I’ve came up with a simple list of gifts I’ve given my mom in the past and even one idea that is perfect for the last minute gift-giver!

#1) Framed Picture ($10)

You can’t ever go wrong with a frame and picture of you and your mom! The reason this made it into this month’s blog is because I recently asked my mom what her favorite gift I had ever given to her was – the picture below was what she said! I gave this to her back in college and it has sat on her dresser ever since.

#2) Antique Candle Works ($15 and up)

I’m a huge fan of local businesses and Antique Candle Works is one of my favorites. This business sells vintage inspired soy candles. I wouldn’t be surprised if she came up multiple times in my blog! I discovered this business at the Chesterton European Market a few years ago and have been a fan ever since. The owner is a Purdue graduate (Boiler Up!) and sells her candles out of many stores in the Northwest Indiana area and many other states. You can place orders online but can check out the closest places to find her candles here. My favorite scents for the Spring season are Lavendar and Sage & Citrus (Fun fact – Sage & Citrus is on sale this month). She has many other scents that I love but I’ll share those with you in the Fall. Seriously, how cute are they?

#3) Fresh Flowers, Chocolate, and a Card !

In a hurry this Mother’s Day? Reading this blog the day before Mother’s Day? Don’t worry – I’ve got you covered. A card with a handwritten note, fresh flowers from your local flower shop, and your mother’s favorite chocolate (My mom’s favorite is Dove!). If you want to make it extra special… go pick up a cute vase for the flowers. I always see great vases at TjMaxx/Marshalls and Target.

Pro tip – When writing a card to anyone, add a memory or funny moment from the past year. Personalizing it is the best way to make it have some meaning. Just today I came across Foursided Card & Gifts in East Lakeview (Chicago) and they have some of the cutest cards I’ve ever seen. Easily had over 100 cards just for Mother’s Day! If you’re in the area, I’d highly recommend a stop into this cute gift shop.

Never forget that the greatest gift to give anyone is your time. Make your mother breakfast, go on a walk with her, or spend some time at the local ice cream shop catching up.  Thanks for reading my April blog post and feel free to subscribe so you don’t miss my next post in May!

The Best Gift of 2016

Hello friends!

Welcome to my very first blog post. I’m excited to announce this small project that has had my mind running with ideas for about a year now. It’s pretty simple, I LOVE giving gifts! This blog will be dedicated to ideas for giving gifts for all occasions, for all ages and for all budgets. I’ll also throw in a few things about etiquette/advice when it comes to things such as thank you cards, gift wrapping, etc.

I wouldn’t call myself an expert or pro at giving gifts. I’d just say I’m very thoughtful and creative. While this blog will grow with ideas that include both products and experience based gifts, don’t forget that time is truly the greatest gift of all.

Let’s move on to the best gift of 2016. The recipient of this gift was for a close friend and her family.  This gift idea came about in Spring of 2016 as I was watching my friend’s kids play outside of their Chicago, Illinois home. They are the biggest Cubs fans I know and had a “W” flag proudly flying on their porch (No bandwagon fans here!). I decided to snap some pictures of her kids playing. Later that evening, as I was looking at the pictures I came up with the idea of having someone sketch their home and including the “W” flag. Knowing how much my friend adored their Chicago home made it a done deal that it’d be an upcoming gift for her family!

Just before Thanksgiving, I found Geralyn of @doorbefore on Instagram. I sent her the pictures I took that summer and requested the “W” flag be added into her sketch. Within a few days she had sent me a rough draft and I couldn’t have been more happy. Check out the pictures of the house and the final sketch below.

My friend loved it to say the least (She may have also cried a little bit). Her thank you card to me said she doesn’t think I’ll ever be able to top it.  I’m not sure if I will be able to either! You may ask why is this the best gift I’ve ever given? In one word: Memories. The memories I have in the home I grew up in as a kid, the home I grew up in during my teen years, and even my home during college hold so many happy memories that I hold near and dear to my heart!

Check out more examples of Geralyns work on her Instagram page @doorbefore and for ordering and pricing, find her on Etsy at www.doorsbefore.com. She is currently in the middle of a move and isn’t taking custom home orders but has introduced other unique ways to share the love of your home. Don’t hesitate to reach out to her with questions!

I gave this present as a Christmas gift but it could work for almost any type of gift – Housewarming/Going Away, Birthdays, Anniversaries, Mothers/Fathers Day, etc. I would love to hear about the best gift you’ve ever given to someone! Comment below or email me at erinslikestogift@gmail.com. Questions about my blog or looking for a gift idea for a specific occasion? Don’t hesitate to reach out and I’ll do my best to send you some ideas.

Thanks for reading my very first post and I look forward to being a resource for you to find a perfect gift for your friends, coworkers, and family!

Introducing ErinlikestoGift!

I am excited to introduce you to my new blog – “Erinlikestogift”.  A blog dedicated to giving gifts! I’ve been passionate about giving gifts for some time now. If you are coming across this blog and have never met me before,  let me introduce myself. I’m Erin! I’m from a small town in Indiana and currently reside in the beautiful windy city of Chicago. I’m a Purdue University Alum (Go Boilers!) and work in sales/advertising.
